HISTORY of the 2nd/6911th RSM AMATEUR RADIO ACTIVITY

in DARMSTADT, GERMANY 1954-1959
Prepared by Galen White on July 7, 2008

with input from the 2nd RSM Radio Amateurs listed below

The 2nd/6911th RSM Amateur Radio Club (DL4CA) was started in about 1954.  It was located in the basement of a Cambria Fritsch Kaserne building.  The station equipment consisted of a BC-610 transmitter running 700 watts, a Collins 51J receiver and a double folded dipole antenna. As far as I know the Radio Club shut down in late 1956 or 1957.  Jim Fodor was able to contact 251 countries using a Globe Chief transmitter setup for phone.

In early 1958 a MARS Amateur Radio Club (DL4OL) was started.  Dennis Mason - K0BYK was the trustee and President.  Raymond Baldwin - W8QAP was also an active MARS station participant.  The MARS station was located in the Army HQ Building.  The club won the CQ World Wide DX Contest in our Division in 1959.

Besides using the DL4CA Amateur Radio Club and the DL4OL MARS Amateur Radio station the amateurs also operated their own stations or used equipment in military communications on the base that worked on the amateur frequencies.
