The American soldiers of Cambrai-Fritsch Kaserne
in South Darmstadt
celebrated their farewell from the city with a summer festival.
Army spokesperson Teri
Viedt said that the army will vacate the station
by autumn and withdraw all the soldiers from
Darmstadt.
There are now about 500 soldiers belonging
to the military news service stationed in the
Cambrai-Fritsch
Kaserne.
Their unit will be relocated to Wiesbaden
in the coming weeks.
With the soldiers’ families and civilian
suppliers about 1000 people connected with the Army live in the
Kaserne and the surrounding settlements.
On July 3rd,
in
Darmstadt
the flag will be reeled in.
By the end of September, the
Kaserne and the Housing Areas of the group must be
vacated.
Since 1954, every year, the city, together
with the American army has celebrated a summer festival.
At the Barbecue, Mayor Walter Hoffmann
(SPD) reminisced about the close contact that in past years had
developed between the Americans and the citizens of
Darmstadt.
The soldiers came as liberators and are
going now as friends that people will miss.
Their warmth and openness will not be
forgotten.
The American station commander, David
Astin said, the soldiers had always felt
warmly welcomed in Darmstadt.
During the 2006 World Cup Austin reported
how he felt how strong the friendship had become through of like-minded
jubilation with German friends and how strongly he found
Darmstadt
to be a second home.
The Cambrai-Fritsch
Kaserne encompasses 25 hectares.
Together with the settlements and a depot
in autumn, an expanse of 120 hectares will be freed up.
At the present time, the city is discussing
what should be built on this property.
As of yet, there are no concrete plans.
After initial considerations, in the area
of the Kaserne, that stands from the year
1938, Single family and multi-unit housing could be built and also in
the south-lying
Jefferson settlement.
In the Kaserne
area there is space for about 240 houses, in the settlement for 280
houses.
The land value there is worth up to 470
Euro per square meter.
As the population of Darmstadt
continues to grow, about 600 new dwellings will be needed yearly.
